KIA Named Best Total Cost of Ownership Brand by KBB.com

New Report from Leading Online Resource Highlights Kia in Non-Luxury Segment
  • Value-packed and fuel-efficient vehicles such as Rio, Forte and Optima help the brand lead its segment in Total Cost of Ownership
  • Kia's diverse and fun-to-drive vehicle lineup offers unmatched levels of style, performance, fuel efficiency, technology and overall value
IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading online automotive resource Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com recently reported the top automotive manufacturers with the lowest average Total Cost of Ownership for the initial five-year ownership period, with Kia Motors America (KMA) landing in the top position for non-luxury brands.  Calculating depreciation, expected fuel costs, insurance, maintenance and repair costs, state fees and more, Kia's average Total Cost of Ownership came in below $40,000 over a five-year ownership period, besting all other non-luxury brands with a full-model lineup.

"Kia Motors is committed to offering consumers a full array of high-quality cars and CUVs that provide a combination of world-class styling, cutting-edge technology and an abundance of standard convenience and safety features, and being recognized as a cost of ownership leader by kbb.com is further proof of the brand's compelling value equation," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  "Consumers are looking to make smart purchases and stretch their dollars, and every Kia vehicle allows them to do just that with low starting prices and outstanding fuel economy, without sacrificing fun-to-drive performance or the modern amenities new car shoppers now expect."

Total Cost of Ownership is developed using Kelley Blue Book® Residual Values to calculate depreciation costs.  According to the website, depreciation plays the largest role in Total Cost of Ownership, followed by the cost of fuel during the initial five-year ownership period.  The company then calculates total ownership costs for new vehicles by applying a valuation methodology along with critical financial data from third-party providers.
Kelley Blue Book's goal for providing the Total Cost of Ownership for vehicles is so consumers can better understand the overall financial implications associated with vehicle ownership through the initial five-year ownership period.  Kelley Blue Book's Total Cost of Ownership features easy-to-understand charts and graphs on kbb.com to help car shoppers make informed purchase decisions by breaking down the typical ownership costs for a particular vehicle.  For more information, visit Kelley Blue Book's www.kbb.com.

2011 KIA Rio named "Best Overall Value" by Truecar.com

  • Kia's Sub-Compact Sedan Lauded for Remarkable Fuel Efficiency and Low Purchase Price
  • With gas prices on the rise the Rio is recognized for achieving an estimated 36 miles per gallon1 on the highway

Sub-compact sedan offers spirited performance, a generous list of standard convenience and safety features and a strong overall value proposition

IRVINE, Calif., April 8, 2011 - For years the Kia Rio has stood out as a fuel efficiency and overall value leader, receiving accolades such as a 2010 Consumer Guide® Automotive "Recommended Vehicle" and being included on the "Most Fuel-Efficient Cars for the Buck" list by Forbes.com for the 2009 model year. This week the fuel-sipping Rio added another award to its trophy case when the sub-compact sedan was named a "Best Overall Value" on the Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicles list by TrueCar.com. An online authority on new car pricing, trends and forecasts, TrueCar.com included Rio for its invaluable combination of a low average purchase price and high fuel efficiency – significant as gas prices continue to rise.

"With the continued increase in gas prices, more and more consumers are basing their purchase decisions not only on impressive fuel efficiency, but overall value and what features you get for your money," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, Kia Motors America (KMA). "The 2011 Rio is a practical and economical car that exceeds the expectations of today's discriminating small car shoppers."

To compile the list, TrueCar.com divided the average national purchase price of a vehicle by the average annual cost of fuel for that particular vehicle2. All vehicles included on the list have a TrueCar.com Average Price3 between $13,685 and $17,000 and a combined mpg between 28 and 33, resulting in a fuel cost per year between $1,654 and $1,971. To be considered, all models must currently be on sale with a seating capacity of four or more and an automatic transmission.

About the 2011 Kia Rio

Available in base, LX and SX trims, pricing starts at a competitive $12,2954 for the base model, which is equipped with 14-inch wheels and 175/70R14 tires, body-color bumpers, outside mirrors, door handles and body-side moldings matched with black-bezel headlights that give the sub-compact a sleek, attractive profile. The LX trim starts at $14,995 and adds 185/65R14 tires with the option of upgrading to 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels paired with 195/55R15 tires. Consumers wanting even more can opt for the sporty stunner SX model, which starts at $16,095 and comes standard with beefier 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 205/45R16 tires, front fog lights, a bright exhaust finisher and a body-color rear spoiler for an athletic finishing touch.

In addition to tremendous value, the 2011 Rio also offers outstanding fuel efficiency. When paired with the manual transmission, the spirited four-cylinder produces an estimated 28/34 mpg (city/highway), while the same engine, when mated to the automatic transmission, outputs an impressive estimated 27/36 mpg5. Also available on LX and SX trims is the EcoMinder™ fuel efficiency monitor, an added benefit in tracking real-time fuel economy.

2011 Sorento wins "Top 10 Family Cars for 2011"

2011 Kia Sorento Named to 'Top 10 Family Cars of 2011' List by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com

First Kia Vehicle Built in the U.S.(1) is Lauded For Superior Mix of Ride, Handling and Interior Appeal
- Stylish, family-friendly CUV combines fuel efficiency and spacious interior for the best of both worlds
- Kia's best-selling vehicle offers families a child-friendly option at an outstanding value

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 24, 2011 -- The 2011 Kia Sorento CUV has received a lot of attention since arriving in January 2010, and that trend continues this week as Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com names the compact CUV one of the "Top 10 Family Cars of 2011."  Recognized for its exceptional mix of ride and handling as well as a stylish and functional interior, the 2011 Sorento has achieved a number of historic firsts for Kia, including becoming the company's first vehicle to surpass 100,000 units in a single year and being the first vehicle built at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point, Georgia.

The Sorento combines Kia's distinctive design language with a comprehensive list of standard safety, convenience and technology features and was named a 2010 "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

"Sorento's recognition as one of the 'Top 10 Family Cars of 2011' by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com is well deserved with its striking design and standout combination of performance, safety equipment and family friendly features," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, Kia Motors America.  "As one of several recently introduced and dynamically styled products from Kia, Sorento accounts for more than 30 percent of our sales volume, making it the most popular vehicle in the Kia lineup."

Editors from Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com judged vehicles based on characteristics that make vehicles family-friendly, including safety, comfort, economy of operation, child-friendliness, a reasonable purchase price and good resale value.  The kbb.com editors believe that all of the worthy vehicles on this year's "Top 10 Family Cars of 2011" list will provide an excellent ownership experience for the families who choose to make them their own.

"The 2011 Kia Sorento is our new favorite in what we often label the two-and-a-half-row segment," say editors from Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.  "If you need three rows on a daily basis or plan on putting adults in the way back, you'll be better served by something larger.  But if your three-row needs are occasional and involve at least a couple elementary-schoolers, the 2011 Kia Sorento is a more affordable, more fuel-efficient, more maneuverable alternative.  A superior mix of ride, handling and interior appeal helped cement the Sorento's spot on this year's list of 'Top 10 Family Cars'."

New Rio has its own interpretation of Kia's signature grille, integrated with the headlamps to give a new twist on the Kia family look. In profile, the body to glass ratio and its strong wedge form give new Rio a dynamic stance.

2011 KIA Sportage TURBO! YES, TURBO!!!

KIA  INTRODUCES MORE POWERFUL SPORTAGE SX TURBO CROSSOVER

  • New Model Offers Advanced Turbocharged Engine and Dynamic Handling
  • Kia's popular compact CUV adds powerful yet efficient 2.0-liter Turbo GDI engine for enhanced performance and class-leading fuel economy
  • SX model offers sport-tuned suspension and unique exterior and interior enhancements

ORLAND, Fl, March 4, 2011 - On the heels of its 2011 International Truck of the Year recognition by ICOTY jurors, Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced the launch of the all-new 2011 Sportage SX compact CUV, scheduled to arrive in dealer showrooms later this month. As part of Kia's design-led transformation, the Sportage has become a strong player within the Kia line-up, offering power and class-leading fuel economy. SX models take a solid foundation and up the ante with a more powerful four-cylinder turbo engine, exterior styling enhancements and unique interior options.

The Sportage SX joins the 2011 Optima Turbo as Kia's second vehicle in the U.S to feature the powerful Theta II 2.0-liter Turbo GDI engine and adds unique exterior and interior features and luxury appointments to provide consumers a high performance and high value CUV. In combination with a highly efficient six-speed automatic transmission, the new Sportage SX features up to 256 horsepower while maintaining class-leading fuel economy1 of 27 miles per gallon on the highway, better than any other turbo-equipped compact CUV on the market today. In addition to powertrain enhancements, the Sportage SX employs sport-tuned suspension featuring firmer shock and strut rates for improved handling and dynamic performance over non-SX models.

"Sportage offers an ideal mix of performance, fuel efficiency and utility for the discriminating compact CUV buyer," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "With the addition of a more powerful Turbo GDI engine, unique interior appointments and improved performance, the Sportage SX makes an already appealing CUV even more fun to drive."

On the outside, SX models receive unique 18" alloy wheels, a signature SX grille, dual exhaust, and special side sill moldings. Exterior updates are complemented by SX-specific interior appointments adding more refinement inside the cabin, including standard aluminum door sills and a sleek new supervision gauge cluster. Available exclusively on the Sportage SX, Orange and Blue interior color packages offer more interior color choices for potential buyers. The Orange Color Package includes orange stitching on the steering wheel, center console, and seats coupled with orange accents on the door panels and air vents. A unique blue patterned cloth seat and blue interior accents are included as part of the Blue Color Package.

More Powerful, Fuel-Efficient SX Engine

Kia Motors' Theta II 2.0-liter Turbo GDI engine delivers significant performance with a powerful inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces up to 256 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of peak torque. The Sportage SX turbo utilizes a twin-scroll design which offers improved combustion efficiency, more available low-end power, and reduced turbo-lag as compared to more traditional single-scroll turbo systems.

The twin-scroll design features two valve-operated exhaust gas inlets responsible for feeding exhaust flow through separate paths into the turbine. Utilizing a divided manifold, exhaust gasses from separate cylinders travel more efficiently into the turbocharger's turbine, avoiding possible interference. The result is a system that improves efficiency and pressure distribution, lowers exhaust and cylinder temperatures, and prevents loss of exhaust energy. The quantity of the air entering each cylinder is increased, resulting in more power.

Sportage LX and EX trims come standard with a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), offering more power (up to 176 hp) and better fuel economy (22/31 city/highway) than the previous 2.7-liter V6 engine.

2011 KIA Sportage gets a Turbo Engine Option!

AWARD WINNING 2011 SPORTAGE EXTENDS ITS PRODUCT OFFERING FEATURING SX TRIM WITH ALL-NEW FLAGSHIP ENGINE.

Sportage SX provides debut of 2.0L Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) producing power of a V6, while achieving outstanding fuel economy of a four-cylinder.

2011 Sportage will offer UVO infotainment technology powered by Microsoft®
Sportage offers standard technological and safety features expected on vehicles priced much higher

The all-new, completely redesigned 2011 Sportage lineup will be extended in late spring at Jim Butler KIA's showroom with the arrival of the all-new SX trim that features the all-new 2.0L Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) producing the power of a V6, while achieving the fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine. The Sportage SX also offers additional standard equipment and design that distinguishes the Sportage even further from any other vehicle in the segment or on the road.

The all new Sportage SX showcases Kia's remarkable styling, and offers enhanced driving performance, as well as an upscale and contemporary interior with an impressive array of standard technological features. "The addition of the SX package to the all-new 2011 Sportage further enhances our positive momentum on the vehicle while introducing a whole new dimension to both design and power including exception fuel economy", said Robert Staffieri, Marketing Director of Kia Canada Inc. "The Sportage SX completes our powertrain offering for the Sportage and the 2.0L Turbo GDI provides a high level of world-class technology."

Incorporating many of the key styling elements of the Kue concept, the Sportage proudly displays Kia's new signature design language, with dramatic swept back headlamps, signature family grille, and distinctive lower fascia treatment. The dynamically shaped hood, framed by a distinctive windshield design, adds to its bold flair.

    SX Powertrain
The 2011 Sportage SX will offer the all-new 2.0L Turbo GDI engine which is a win / win / win technology that enhances power and fuel efficiency while at the same time reducing emissions. This is accomplished by injecting highly pressurized fuel directly into the cylinder (instead of intake tract) where a more complete combustion occurs resulting in the aforementioned benefits. A Twin-Scroll Turbocharger & Intercooler Turbocharging the 2.0L-T GDI greatly enhances power by forcing more air into the engine than would normally be possible. An intercooler cools the air for a denser, oxygen rich intake charge which results in even more power. The advanced 'Twin Scroll' turbo design greatly reduces turbo spool-up lag time and achieves a desirable early and flat torque curve. The introduction of the 2.0L Turbo GDI engine to the Kia lineup is extremely exciting and is intended to showcase Kia's dedication to developing and utilizing state-of-the-art technology in Kia's design-led vehicle evolution. Technology such as GDI and Turbo allow Kia to design vehicles that achieve top tier performance, produce fewer emissions and opens the door to extraordinary fuel economy numbers. These powertrains will be the staple to designing future vehicles that utilize this combination of impressive technology.

The Sportage SX will be coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission engineered and manufactured by Kia Motors which is one of the most compact and fuel efficient transmissions in the market today. This transmission boasts fully variable hydraulic line pressure control (improves fuel economy) and adaptive learning which actually 'learns' the driving style of the driver and custom tailors the shift points. In terms of durability, the new 6-speed automatic transmission adapts to normal internal wear by adjusting hydraulic pressure to maintain that 'like new' shift feeling throughout the lifetime of the vehicle. Also added is a new feature called 'Neutral Control (NC)' that effectively shifts the transmission into Neutral while stuck in traffic  that improves fuel economy. 'Neutral Control (NC)' works in conjunction with another feature called 'Hill Assist Control (HAC)' that prevents any rollback.

    SX Standard Features
Building on the standard features found on the EX Luxury including Smart Key Push Button Start, Panoramic Sunroof, 18" Alloy wheels, Driver Ventilated Seat, UVO Infotainment System powered by Microsoft®, Premium Sound (7 speakers), Rear Spoiler, Deluxe Door Scuff, SX Leather Seating and Auto Dimming Mirror with Homelink.

UVO Infotainment System powered by Microsoft®
The 2011 Sportage SX will also include as a standard feature the UVO or "Your Voice" for short, infotainment system. UVO is an innovative and intelligent in-car communications and entertainment system that will also be available in select Kia vehicles starting this spring. UVO provides consumer friendly voice and touch-activated experiences for simple management of music files and hands-free mobile phone operation. Co-developed with Microsoft® and based on Windows Embedded Auto software, UVO is an easy-to-use, hands-free solution that allows drivers and passengers to answer and place phone calls, receive and respond to SMS text messages, access music from a variety of media sources and create custom music experiences.

Entire Sportage Trim Grades & Powertrains
The 2011 Sportage is offered in three trim grades: LX, EX and SX. The LX and EX trims are powered by the venerable 'Theta II Engine', a 176 horsepower, 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine, delivering more horsepower than the previous 2.0L I4 and 2.7-liter V6 engines. The Sportage offers either a 6-speed manual transmission (base) or a full featured 6-speed automatic transmission (all trims other than base). Fuel economy improvements of up to 12% highway and 21% city have been achieved depending on equipment levels on the 2011 Sportage with the 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine versus the outgoing model.

    Standard Features
LX models come standard with an extensive list of convenience features including air conditioning, power windows, heated front seats, cruise control, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and keyless entry. Further increasing the level of refinement the EX models receive a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, telescopic steering wheel, and power driver's seat with lumbar support. Impressive technology features come standard on both trims, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary service1. Also standard on both trims are auxiliary and USB audio input jacks for connecting with MP3 players and Bluetooth®2 wireless technology connectivity with steering wheel-mounted controls.

    Safety Features
Like all Kia vehicles, the 2011 Sportage is equipped with a long list of standard safety equipment. All trims come outfitted with driver and passenger advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags, front active headrests, four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) w/ Traction Control (TC), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Hill Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC). The Sportage also features 'Roll Over Prevention (ROP)' which is a passive system that helps prevent rollover accidents related to speed. A new to Kia feature is 'Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)' that passively monitors wheel traction, steering angle and g-force to ensure the vehicle is driving in the intended path, and if not, will assist the driver by mildly operating the steering wheel in the appropriate direction (through electrical motor).

The Sportage has also introduced motor driven power steering (MDPS) to the Kia lineup resulting in improved fuel economy by using an electric power steering motor instead of loading the engine with a hydraulic power steering pump.
